| Productions: | La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (Jacques Offenbach)
Apr 30, 2010 - May 4, 2010
Stephanie Blythe, one of the most highly-acclaimed artists in opera today, makes her Boston stage debut in the title role of Offenbach's spoiled and capricious but magnetic petty tyrant. As her army musters for a war devised solely for her amusement, the Grande-Duchesse becomes infatuated with a young soldier, whom she rapidly promotes to General. Her least favorite just as quickly falls out of favor - and she joins in the assassination plot - when he marries his sweetheart.
La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein offers a wickedly incisive satire of militarism, diplomatic maneuverings, and the caprices of the ruling class, set to a delightfully effervescent score that exemplifies Offenbach's genius for liveliness and humor.
Sung in French / Spoken dialogue in English with projected titles.
